Disappearing into the night

June 20, 2020

This just in.  Baseball teams in the New York Penn League were told that the start of the season will be postponed indefinitely.  You think?

The 82nd NYP season was supposed to begin this week.  As the Major Leagues debate terms of a return to action… the Minor Leagues have been told nothing officially.  The Minor Leagues are road kill in the grand scheme of things.  Especially the teams in the New York Penn.

Its members figure prominently in the 42 teams on death row.  Teams like the Batavia Muckdogs and Auburn Doubledays who will be eliminated in baseball’s restructuring.  We can debate their right to exist another time.  But just like the graduates from the class of 2020… these teams have lost something they’ll never get back.  A last hurrah.  A celebration of their existence.  One last chance to declare, “We once mattered.”  Before they disappear into the night.
Now for teams like the Batavia Muckdogs and Auburn Doubledays… they’ll simply disappear.
