Sports Beat Insider – Feb. 1, 2020

Go Inside the Sports Beat with Baylee Teal of Penfield Girls Basketball, and Jon Schwind’s Challenger Baseball camp

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College.  Many thanks to Alfred State College for sponsoring the Sports Beat, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.

Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors. It’s Week 22 of the season, and the winter sports are beginning to gear up for sectionals…

We begin this week with a look at the road to recovery for Penfield’s Baylee Teal.  Injured in the off-season while playing down south, Baylee went thru surgery and 8 months of rehab to make it back for her senior season with Patriots.

The story, unfortunately – due to legal reasons – had to be edited in a odd manner, which I hope does not distract from the great story of resilience on Baylee’s part.

13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook.  Matt and Dave Yates talk some Section V basketball, including the undefeated Girls of Northstar Christian Academy, and strong seasons from the Boys of Cal-Mum and Greece Odyssey.

Kyle O’Gara is up next with this week’s Making the Grade  segment, … and, as always, if you have a candidate for our Making the Grade segment, send us an email to MTG@RocSportsNow.com or fill-in our contact form.  This week, we honor Jazmine Darling of Greece Arcadia.

The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some Section V stars, including Spencerport Wrestling’s Silas Egenlauf…

Our top story of the week takes us to Salmon Creek County Club for the Challenger Baseball Spring Training event.  It’s the 4th annual camp, and a day that is very special for the participants, but also the event’s founder – Jon Schwind.

A Hilton graduate, Schwind was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011.  His playing career came to an end, due to injuries, but Schwind has remained a part of the Pittsburgh organization, most recently serving as 3rd base coach and assistant hitting instructor for the Indianapolis Indians.

We present to you now an expanded ‘Director’s Cut’ of our story…

And that’s a wrap on week 21 of Season 9!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From March 7, 2012– a huge Sectional match-up from the top teams of Girls Basketball in Section V – as Penfield faces Gates-Chili.  This season, Penfield just defeated Gates to hand the Spartans their first loss of the season.  In 2012,  it was Penfield heading into the game undefeated – led by Michelle Nesselbush and Margot Hetzke.
