Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College. Many thanks to Alfred State College for sponsoring the Sports Beat, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.
Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors. It’s Week 20 of the season, and time to recognize some Section V Alums…
We begin our look at the college careers of some of Section V’s top athletes with a special #Flashback to 2016. Webster Schroeder’s Matt Gamble was a two-time state champion in tennis, and with his senior season winding down, was looking towards a third title, and his future at Notre Dame University… Here is that story, now expanded and remastered, in a special edition for 2020.
13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook. Matt and Dave Yates talk some Section V Hockey, and continue the theme of the show with updates at college for Jack Dugan (Providence), David Farrance (Boston) and Nate Sucese (Penn State). Plus, Trabs shares with us some thoughts and highlights from this year’s RAP Hoops Tournament.
Kyle O’Gara is up next with this week’s Making the Grade segment, … and, as always, if you have a candidate for our Making the Grade segment, send us an email to MTG@RocSportsNow.com or fill-in our contact form. This week, we honor Janson McNair of Spencerport.
The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some Section V stars, including Greece Athena’s Destiny Fernandes, who is in her first year with Bowling Green’s Track & Field team.
Our top story is another college update, this time taking us to Canisius College, where the Siena Saints Mens basketball team was visiting. Siena’s leading scorer and point guard, is Aquinas grad Jalen Pickett. Last season, Jalen was the MAC Rookie of the Year, and nearly declared for the NBA draft. Now, in a sophomore year that can often be a ‘slump’, Jalen is finding more success, and moving up draft lists in the process.
And that’s a wrap on week 20 of Season 9! Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From February 6, 2016 – a big boys basketball match-up between the Rush-Henrietta Royal Comets and Aquinas. The Lil Irish would go on to win the State Title, with a team led by Jalen Pickett, Earnest Edwards and Jamir Jones.
