Sports Beat Insider – Nov. 30, 2019

Go Inside the Sports Beat for our “Best of the Fall Season” part 1!

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College.  Many thanks to Alfred State College for sponsoring the Sports Beat, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.

Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 12 of the season, and that time of the year when we look back at our favorite stories from the just-completed Fall Season…

We begin with a look back to our visit with the Irondequoit Girls Volleyball team, a team we profiled on Sept. 21… at the time, the Eagles we off to a strong start to the season, and hopes were high for a return to Sectionals, and maybe even States.  Things worked out well for Marc Callari’s squad – as they won the Section V title, and finished the season as the Class A State runner-up.

13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook.  Matt and Dave Yates talk Section V Football’s last team standing – the McQuaid Jesuit Knights – and also a look at the Eddie Meath Senior All-Star Game…

Kyle O’Gara is up next with this week’s Making the Grade  segment, … and, as always, if you have a candidate for our Making the Grade segment, send us an email to MTG@RocSportsNow.com or fill-in our contact form.  This is part 1 of our 2-part look at all the Fall Season honoree’s…

The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some Section V stars, doing some big things , like the Pittsford Mendon duo of Sam Lawler and Megan Deuel… not to mention another McQuaid team with State-level success…

Our Second story this week is another ‘Best of the Fall” favorite, and technically – it was from the Boys of Summer, and a baseball travel team with a message.  The Greece Tornadoes went the extra mile this year to honor the fallen – by wearing the names of soldiers, who gave their lives in defense of our country, on the backs of their jerseys.

And that’s a wrap on week 12 of Season 9!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From February 15, 2012 – one of our favorite stories from our first season, and one we were glad to be able to tell.  Andrew Longwell is not your ordinary PA announcer – as an 8th grader, he served as the voice of the Greece Athena Trojans girls basketball team.  Andrew lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy but his love of sports and announcing could not keep him away from the court.
