Press Box Recap – Dec. 8, 2018

Catch a recap of the Press Box with Carl Falk, Mike Catalana and Pat Duffy.

Welcome to your weekly recap of the Press Box – airing on weekends on the CW Rochester and on 13 WHAM ABC.

This Week, Carl Falk from FOX Sports 1280 joins host Bill Pucko and regular panelists Mike Catalana (13 WHAM Sports) and Pat Duffy (WCMF Breakroom).  We’re on location at the Genesee Brew House, and feeling in a festive mood (what with the little christmas trees and all).  Carl returns to the show, having last appeared on November 10.

We kick off the show with Bill Pucko’s favorite baseball season, the Hot Stove league!  We actually spent some time discussing the origins of the term –  and the one thing we all agreed on – baseball has a lot of old-timey terminology.  (Baltimore chop, anyone?)

The Buffalo Bills finally decided to part ways with Kelvin Benjamin… the writing was on the wall for some time, but it was still kind of surprising to see him go.

We also continue our NFL Picks contest in this segment… and for the first time since week 1, everyone picked the Bills to win.

Like it or Not starts with the Sabres… Bill asks Pat if the run of 1-goal losses for Buffalo is a positive sign.  In baseball, losing often by 1-run tends to mean your team is close, and maybe a player away from winning.  Conversely, winning by 1-run may mean your team’s not as good as their record would indicate.  I think we’re talking hockey though, so that’s kinda apples-to-oranges…

The hot topic for this week is Kareem Hunt.  The Chiefs, no doubt, made the right call to release him.  And someone, also no doubt, will sign him.  He’s in the prime of his career, and the NFL loves second chances (see Vick, Michael or Peterson, Adrian).

Pat has more to say about Kareem Hunt in his Unfinished Business… or more to the point, he has something to say about the someone’s saying something about Hunt. You see, Pat has a long memory (also, internet access) – and the likes of James Lofton, Mike Tirico and Ray Lewis – they have a past too (just click on their names for more tawdry info).

Carl is next, and he’s thinking about Colin Kaepernick.  It is kind of amazing the Kaepernick hasn’t gotten at least a look, right?  I mean, EJ Manuel is still getting looks.  Nathan Peterman had a tryout with Denver.  Mark Sanchez just started a game in 2018.  What’s up with that?

Mike is ready to take aim at one of his favorite targets… but Ed Hochuli is retired.  His son, Shawn, however, is carrying on the yellow flag tradition.  The NFL is dominated by the ongoing #RefShow, and Roger Goodell is to blame.

That’s the show for this week.  Thanks to Carl for being on with us.
