Press Box Insider – October 20, 2018

The Press Box, presented by the Genesee Brew House, airing October 20/21, 2018.  Hosted by Bill Pucko, with guests Mike Catalana (13 WHAM Sports) Pat Duffy (WCMF Breakroom) and Kevin Oklobzija from Pickin’ Splinters and the Rochester Business Journal.

Kevin returns to the show, for the first time during hockey season.  If you haven’t heard, Kevin knows a thing or two about hockey, having covered the Sabres and Amerks since 1985 or so.

Just for fun, here’s Kevin talking honestly about a potential Sabres rebuild, back in March of 2014…

With Kevin on board, you would expect a lot of hockey to talk… and so we begin with the NFL.  Just a general discussion of the season so far, and what teams have impressed our panel so far.

The discussion of what’s going on with the Buffalo Bills was saved for our next segment.  Prior to the show, there was a pretty good “pre-game” session of Bills talk… a lot of it surrounding Jenna Cottrell‘s pre-game tweet from October 14…

That tweet went viral, with over 24K likes, and making national NFL reporters like Chris Mortensen and Lenny Dykstra comment… Waitaminute… Lenny Dykstra’s still alive?

Anyway, here’s our Bills segment, and Pat getting upset…

 

Next up, Like it or Not… at this point the show was running along, so the 2nd topic (on the Buffalo Sabres) got a bit short-changed, but luckily Kevin has some Unfinished Business to go over later… Our main topic, a question about the Astros cheating against Boston (and Cleveland, and Oakland, and probably others…) ends up turning into an anti-New England rant from Duffy.  We didn’t really get to talk about the Astros much, but fans of the Bills will probably love seeing how much Pat hates the Pats…

Unfinished Business kicks off with Pat Duffy talking about Ohio State’s Nick Bosa and his decision to leave school to rehab his injury, and prepare himself for the NFL draft.  Pat loves it.  And it’s not just an anti-Buckeye stance, but it may be a bit of an anti-NCAA stance.

Kevin – the hockey expert, who usually comes on the show to talk hockey – finally gets to talk some hockey.  Sabres and Amerks are on his mind, and we are all the beneficiaries  of his insight.

Mike wraps up the show with a look at Aaron Rodgers.  While no one would argue whether is Rodgers is the best QB in the NFL, Mike also wants you to know that Rodgers sets the standard, and that rookie QB’s, like the one in Buffalo named Josh Allen, should pay attention to how Rodgers plays, and handles the pressures of being the best in the game today.
