Sports Beat Insider – Oct. 20, 2018

Go Inside the Sports Beat with the HAC Wolves Cross Country team and the girls of Odyssey Tennis

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the Vision High School Sports Beat, your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 7 of the Sports Beat season, and the fall sports season is in the final run, with sectionals under way.  It’s a quick season!

We begin this week with the Girls Cross Country team at Harley-Allendale Columbia.  The Wolves have been on an incredible run, at the time of our story being filmed, having won 67 straight league meets.  This weekend, they went on to win their 4th straight league title (Finger Lakes/Wayne League) and their 3rd straight undefeated regular season.  Coach Dan Deckman has built a strong program for the Class C girls.  Tariq Spence, of WDKX, was on-hand to hear the story of the Wolves…

Our Dunkin Donuts High School Notebook is up next… Paul Gotham of PickinSplinters.com joins Dave Yates to talk about Section V Boys Soccer, and the really strong case that can made, for 6 teams, to be in contention for the Class A title.  For more reading on the subject, Matt Trabold of Pickin’ Splinters has you covered.

Next up, Kim Berntson joins us to present this week’s Making the Grade nominee… Remember, we would love to hear about a student-athlete who is accomplishing both on the field and off – this week’s nominee was a website submission, so don’t be shy, and tell us about your athlete’s achievements!

Next up is the Section V Spotlight… this week’s names in the spotlight include a Section V who did something great at the college level – Micah Wright, formerly a Newark Red, and now a Maine Bear.

The Varsity Media Section V Top 5 Football Plays of the Week are next… a big week of big plays, including a number 1 play eerily reminiscent of last week’s no. 1 – some great athletics on display by the Section V Freddie’s – Brock and June.

Our main story of the week is the “Epic Journey” of the Greece Odyssey Girls tennis team.  For the first time in school history, the Leopards have 2 singles players making into sectional play…

They have their double team playing for a sectional title as well.  Paul Gotham and I ventured to Greece Olympia to watch the quartet prepare for sectionals, and Paul took in the action for doubles play at the Mendon Racquet club.

The doubles team of Mariah Carson and Gillian Smith won the sectional title, and became the 1st doubles team in Odyssey history to advance as far as the Sweet 16 in state qualifying play.  In tennis, all the classes combine for state qualifier play, so a big accomplishment for the Leopards, and a historic year for the girls!

And that’s a wrap on week 7!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 7 years.  From October 5, 2011 – our 2nd ever episode and a profile of the Pittsford Sutherland Girls tennis team – then on an incredible win streak, of 132 games.  Featuring head coach Joe Thyroff, and students who all went on to participate on college tennis teams – Haley Kusak, Sara Kashtan and Alana Green.  The streak by Sutherland would reach 144 games, before ending at the hands of rival Pittsford Mendon.
