Sports Beat Insider – March 21, 2020

Go Inside the Sports Beat with the Class B1 Final between Geneva and Waterloo, and Class A1 East vs West Irondequoit Game

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College.  Many thanks to Alfred State College for sponsoring the Sports Beat, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.

Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors. It’s Week 28 of the Sports Beat season – and the world as we know it is a very different one.  We will try to continue to bring you a weekly high school sports show during this pandemic, and we hope everyone stays safe and healthy until we can all get back on the field.

We’re looking at a couple of the Section V finals from the Blue Cross Arena this week, starting with the B1 final.  Geneva and Waterloo met twice during the regular season, and the Panthers managed to come out on top both times – but playing in the Big House, anything can happen.

13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook.  Matt and Dave Yates talk some Section V alums – including Penn State – and Fairports’ – Nate Sucese. Plus, the Brockport Golden Eagles got a lift from a couple of Section V’ers as well…

The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some Section V stars, including a couple of State Track Champions in Hilton’s Anaya Dees and Webster Thomas’s Monique Hardy.

Our top story is the Class A1 Finals between cross-town rivals… Irondequoit and Eastridge.  We covered the Lancers earlier this year, and it was the day after a tough loss to the Eagles.  It seemed like destiny that the Lancers would need to get by their rivals to earn their 1st Section V title since 1964…

And that’s a wrap on week 28 of Season 9!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From June 23, 2018 – it was our 7th Season Finale, and a special one at that… long-time host Bill Pucko returned to the show as the guest on the High School Notebook, to talk with Dave Yates about the previous 7 seasons of the Sports Beat.  As we contemplate a lost Spring sports season, we will be looking more to the past each week on the Sports Beat – to remember the good times and great moments, until we can one day make some new great moments, and again enjoy the good times of Section V Sports.
