Sports Beat Insider – Dec. 28, 2019

Go Inside the Sports Beat with Chesterton Academy Basketball and Hilton Cheer with Muddy’s Buddies

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College.  Many thanks to Alfred State College for sponsoring the Sports Beat, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.

Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 16 of the season, and our final episode of 2019!

We begin this week on the campus of RIT, where the Chesterton Academy Chargers are playing basketball against Rochester Prep.  No big deal, right?  What if I told you it was the first year of varsity basketball, girls and boys, for Chesterton?  And, what if, between the two varsity teams, it meant over half the school was participating in the sport?

It’s remarkable, that in a school with a total student body of 36, they are able to compete.  Credit to the Chargers, and their student athletes – many of whom had never played the sport when this venture formed four years ago…

Now, in a special Roc Sports Now bonus, see Chesterton’s Michael Piersall perform the National Anthem on the bagpipes…

13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook.  Matt and Dave Yates talk Section V Girls Basketball, and the impressive seasons for two teams (Penfield and Bishop Kearney) currently missing star players due to injury…

The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some Section V stars, including HFL’s 3-time state champion wrestler, Anthony Noto

Our top story of the week is part two of our special look at Muddy’s Buddies.  We were proud to be on hand at Northwood Elementary School when the Hilton Cheer squad first met their new ‘buddies’ – Sophie and Allivea.

Presented here now is a Director’s Cut of our story…

And that’s a wrap on week 16 of Season 9!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From January 11, 2012 –  Hilton Athletic Director Mike Giruzzi joined Bill Pucko in the Coaches Corner, to talk about a new initiative at Hilton – the Varsity Athletes Leadership Council.  The program is still going strong today, and indicative of the kind of student athlete you can find in Hilton.
