Sports Beat Insider – Nov. 16, 2019

Go Inside the Sports Beat with the Girls Soccer Class A Finals, and the Class B Football Finals

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College.  Many thanks to Alfred State College for joining the Sports Beat family, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.

Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 10 of the season, and we have Sectional game coverage!

We begin with the Class A Girls soccer match-up between Spencerport and Pittsford Mendon.  The Rangers were looking for their 4th straight Section V Title, but were doing so without many of last year’s top players – including but not limited to Erin Coykendall, Liv Wall and All-American Leah Wengender.  That’s a lot to overcome, and yet, here were the Rangers…

The Rangers would advance to the State Finals, dropping a 2 – 0 decision to Shoreham Wading River.

13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook.  Matt and Dave Yates talk about the Section V Football finals, including the big rematch between Aquinas and McQuaid, as well as the performance of Let/Saw.

Kyle O’Gara is up next with this week’s Making the Grade nominee… and, as always, if you have a candidate for our Making the Grade segment, send us an email to MTG@RocSportsNow.com or fill-in our contact form.  This week, we honor Mike Tracey from Greece Athena.

The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some of the accomplishments of Section V athletes, teams and coaches.

Our top story this week takes us to Growney Stadium at St. John Fisher College, for the Class B Football Finals.  It was the Honeoye Falls – Lima Cougars taking on the Livonia Bulldogs.  HFL was playing without injured RB Mason Ferrara… who was named Class B Offensive Player of the Year.  For Livonia, the offense and defense are led by the large linesman, and the battle would be fought in the trenches…

And that’s a wrap on week 10 of Season 9!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From November 15, 2014 – it was one of those close calls for Livonia, in a Class B Title game against Batavia.  It came down to the last minute, and in favor of the Blue Devils.  We called it “The Play” – and it brought Batavia it’s first Section V Title in 23 seasons…
