Sports Beat Insider – Oct. 12, 2019

Go Inside the Sports Beat with Braiden Wingrove of Hilton Cross Country, and a football showdown between Wilson and Eastridge

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, brought to you by Alfred State College.  Many thanks to Alfred State College for joining the Sports Beat family, and helping to bring weekly coverage of Section V High School Sports to broadcast on 13 WHAM.

Now, here’s your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 5 of the season, and the fall season is gearing up for sectionals (already!)…

We start this week in Hilton, for a very special story.  Braiden Wingrove is a sophomore, and a member of the cross country team.  He ran his first meet last Monday, at Basil-Marella Park in Greece.  Braiden, is blind, and runs with the help of a Hilton teacher, Mike Childs.  Braiden’s story is amazing not only for what he accomplished, but also for what his courage and bravery mean to the rest of the team, and to the entire school.

13 WHAM’s Matt Trabold joins us for the Dunkin High School Notebook.  Matt and Dave Yates talk Section V Football, and a couple of ‘dark horses’ to watch out for, in Hilton and Fairport – and Trabs gives us a bonus ‘dark horse’ in girls soccer…

Kyle O’Gara is up next with this week’s Making the Grade nominee… and, as always, if you have a candidate for our Making the Grade segment, send us an email to MTG@RocSportsNow.com or fill-in our contact form.  This week, we honor Grace Kurzweil from Our Lady of Mercy.

The Section V Spotlight is up next, highlighting some of the accomplishments of Section V athletes, teams and coaches.

Our top story of the week pits two unbeaten Section V Football teams against one another, when Wilson Magnet visits Eastridge.  It’s Homecoming for the Lancers, and their biggest challenge of the season …

Bonus Footage from halftime, as the Lancers Marching Band performs…

And that’s a wrap on week 5 of Season 9!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 8 years. From October 21, 2017 – our first look at the new Wilson Wildcats, and their efforts to get City Football back on track…
