Sports Beat Insider – Nov. 24, 2018

Go Inside the Sports Beat’s Best of the Fall Season, Part 2, with a directors cut interview with Irondequoit’s Jeff Lancy

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the Vision High School Sports Beat, your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 12 of the Sports Beat season, and part 2 of our “Best of the Fall Season” two-parter.

The change-over of sports seasons each year is an opportunity for us to look back at some of our favorite stories of the just completed season.  We start where we began, a week 1 story, with the Greece Athena Boys Soccer team.

It was a story noteworthy thanks to the contributions of Paul Gotham, who traveled with the Trojans to New York City, and captured some of the journey for us.

Up next is a new feature to our “Best of the Season” episodes –  since we’re between sports seasons, using the High School Notebook segment as a chance to sit down with some area coaches, and catch up.  Paul Gotham, from Pickin’ Splinters, takes over the hosting duties and welcomes Irondequoit Girls Soccer Coach Jeff Lancy as his guest.

We present here the extended “director’s cut” of the interview, covering the highlights of Lancy’s long run with the Eagles, and some of the top players he’s coached over the years.

In keeping with the “Best of the Fall Season” theme, this week’s Making the Grade is part 2 of our look at some of the student-athletes we’ve recognized over the last 10 weeks.  Special thanks to Kim Berntson for her work on Making the Grade – and a reminder that you too can nominate a student-athlete for recognition – by emailing info@classywolf.com of filing out our contact form.

The Section V Spotlight, brought to you by McArdle’s in Fairport – looks at the run towards the State Title match for Batavia and Aquinas in Football… they are both heading to the Carrier Dome, and we will be there to bring you the footage – that’s a plug for next week, but until then, here’s the Spotlight…

Our final segment, takes us back to week 4, and the amazing story of Sam Julian.  The Brighton senior battled back from a summer shock – he was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer.  Sam fought hard, and worked his way back… to school, and eventual returning to the football field.  We were there for Brighton’s homecoming match-up with Gates-Chili.

And that’s a wrap on week 12!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 7 years. From November 8, 2014, the Boys sectional title game between Greece Athena and Pittsford Mendon.  Coach Mike Butler’s first season with the Trojans was a memorable one.  Featuring Ryan Lindeman, RJ Nichol and  Jason Siracuse, all future Oswego Lakers, and David Grana, who would head to St. Joe’s.
