Sports Beat Insider – Oct. 27, 2018

Go Inside the Sports Beat with the Wayne Boys Soccer team and Canandaigua Football

Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the Vision High School Sports Beat, your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.  It’s week 8 of the Sports Beat season, and the fall sports season is almost concluded, and sectional champs are being crowned!

We start off this week in Wayne, with the Boys Soccer team coached by Tim Mattle.  Paul Gotham has the story, and – quick plug – if you’re not reading Pickin’ Splinters, you are missing out.

The Wayne Eagles headed into the Sectionals riding a big win streak (which reached 14 games before facing Churchville-Chili), and now that Section V has combined classes, the road to a title in Class A just got that much harder.

As happens on the show, we film more material than needed – and sometimes we have some spare time to produce “Bonus” features… so, here are some Wayne Eagles talking about the importance of playing soccer year-round, including Matt Gentile – who knows a little something about that.  Matt’s GPS 2020 team played in the San Diego Surf Cup tournament this past July.

Paul is back for our next segment, joining host Dave Yates for the Dunkin Donuts High School Notebook.  This week, records are breaking left and right, and Paul has some updates on the likes of Will Rogers of Penn Yan Football, and the Spencerport Girls Soccer team.

Next up is Kim Berntson with this week’s Making the Grade nominee.  Anthony Noto is a two-time state champ in wrestling for Honeoye Falls-Lima, and like some of the Wayne soccer players mentioned earlier, Anthony is wrestling year-round.  Some of his exploits have been mentioned in our Section V Spotlight in the past – and now we recognize him for those accomplishments, as well as what he’s done in the classroom, and in his community.

Speaking of the Section V Spotlight, here’s this weeks’ edition, with updates from a couple of stories we covered earlier this season – with Chloe DeLyser from Marion soccer, and the HAC Girls Cross Country team.

Varsity Media continues to offer up great coverage of Section V sports, and we are proud to partner with them to bring you the Top 5 Football Plays of the Week

Our main story this week takes us to Canandaigua, on a day when the weather was a little wacky.  Cold, windy, occasionally very sunny… and then there was the graupel. But the Braves didn’t get their name by running away from a little weather.  They practiced hard, and almost non-stop.  When Head Coach Jeff Welch talks with Dave Yates, you can see the gravitas behind the goal of bringing Canandaigua a title.

And that’s a wrap on week 8!  Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

Follow the High School Sports Beat on Twitter, and be sure to check back here each Monday for the latest Insider!

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 7 years.  From November 2013, the Class AA Soccer finals between Churchville-Chili and Fairport.  Fairport, coached by Gianni Bussani and the Saints led by John Mahoney, and featuring an incredible bicycle kick goal by the Red Raiders Alexander MangerianLukas Fernandes and Hunter Critchlow are among the players featured.  Another classic from the Sports Beat vault.
