2022 NASCAR Preview: Week 18 – Road America

Road America + 4th of July Weekend = TODAY

We’re at another road course for NASCAR, and another track in as many weeks in which we’ve only run once. Road America is upon us, and the boys are all saddled up for a short race (lap wise), with four mile circuits. Wow!

Here’s what to look for:

Chase Elliott snagged to the Pole for this one, and just so happens to be our favorite here. Why, you ask? His extreme road course prowess, and the fact that he actually won this race last year, too. Watch for him to spend a LOT of time out front today.

Christopher Bell actually ran runner-up to the eventual winner last year. He isn’t someone we typically have circled as a “road course guy,” but results are results. Bell will start 16th today, but he started 13th in 2021 and finished where he did. We’ll see what he can do today.

Ross Chastain won COTA earlier this year, and has flashed some brilliance on road courses before. And that was BEFORE the move to Trackhouse Racing where he’s managed two Wins already this season. He finished 7th in 2021 after starting 8th, and today will roll off 12th.

AJ Allmendinger ran door-to-door with Chastain on the last few laps at COTA with Chastain, but ended up in a gravel pit and ended way the heck back. He’s only in it for the Win as he doesn’t receive points like everyone else, and could worm his way up there. He won the race on the Indianapolis GP course last year, and he probably should’ve won at COTA, too. What does today hold for the ‘Dinger? Stay tuned!

Tyler Reddick is one of the drivers who is still seeking their first career Win, and this could be a surprise one. Last year he finished 8th, and today he’ll start 4th. Last year he started 4th, too. What does that tell me? It says “this guy knows how to get around here alone.” If he can get some clean air, Reddick could really put some distance on the guys behind him.

Coverage of the race starts at 3:00pm on USA. Green flag is scheduled for 3:25pm.
