Welcome to this week’s breakdown of the High School Sports Beat, your behind the scenes look at the production, from the producer and the shows many contributors.
It’s Week 22 of the Sports Beat season, and we’re proud to take a look at some of Section V’s best Girls Basketball teams this week.
We begin in Penfield, where the Patriots are a team driven by defense. We witnessed an intense practice, with every member of the Penfield squad pushing themselves. It wasn’t hard to see how this team could beat then un-beaten Pittsford-Mendon. And it’s not hard to imagine the Patriots playing deep into the post-season.
Paul Gotham from Pickin’ Splinters joins Dave Yates for the Dunkin High School Notebook. This week’s edition is jam-packed with Section V Basketball highlights – including the “Alley-Oop hear ’round the 585”
The Section V Spotlight includes an update on Cierra Dillard, the UB women’s basketball star and Gates-Chili grad. Cierra is now a 1,000 point scorer in her career at University of Buffalo – and even more incredible as she started her collegiate career at UMass.
Our main story of the week takes us to Clifton Springs, where the Midlakes Girls Basketball team is defending Section V champs – and looking to make it a repeat year. The Screaming Eagles, led in scoring by Alaina Forbes, are looking to become the 1st State Champions in Midlakes history.
Every week on the Sports Beat, we shoot more video than we need, and usually those left-over clips are saved for a rainy day. The show this week ran short, allowing for us to end the show with some of the extra footage, and here it is… The left-overs from Penfield and Midlakes.
And that’s a wrap on week 22! Be sure to check out the full episode– and tune in Every Saturday night on 13 WHAM after the late news, and on Sundays at Noon.

We leave you this week, with an Insider weekly feature – looking back at some of our stories from the past 7 years. From January 18, 2012 – our first look at the Penfield Girls team, and Head Coach Mark Vogt. The Patriots were off to a 10-0 start, and led by Megan Malloy and Sheila Nesselbush, older sister of current Patriot, Nina.
